For over 1,400 years, kawara clay has played a pivotal role in Japanese craftsmanship, traditionally utilised to produce kawara tiles—the distinctive roof tiles that adorn temples, shrines, and historic structures throughout Japan. These tiles, introduced from China during the Asuka period (6th–8th century), quickly became emblematic of Japanese architectural excellence.
Known for its durability and natural earthy texture, kawara clay is inherently weather-resistant, offering both protection for buildings and an elegant touch with its rich, muted hues. Over the years, this adaptable material has been repurposed into various artisan goods, from pottery to decorative objects, ensuring its legacy endures in modern Japanese craftsmanship.
